No brick will be left unturned as you’ll be involved in all aspects of the sale, starting with gaining information about properties and taking photos to the handing over the keys. So, whether you love a snoop around different homes, have the gift of the gab when it comes to selling, or want to help someone find their dream home, this is the career for you!

Job Description

Salary (Avg.) £22,000

With a starting salary of between £17,000 – £25,000, and the opportunity to increase this salary the more experience you gain, this is a career with a number of growth opportunities. As an Estate Agent, you’ll also have the opportunity to gain commission, which is extra money you can receive once you sell a property. On average, you could earn £8,000 extra a year, according to Glassdoor.

As an Estate Agent, you’ll have the option to specialise in multiple areas; residential, commercial and agricultural. You’ll be in contact with a number of people throughout the day, from clients or solicitors to other property professionals, negotiating sales and lettings for multiple properties. Your main role will focus on valuing, marketing and leading viewings on properties, with the aim of negotiating the best price for your client.

Qualifications and Skills

To become an Estate Agent, you’ll require your English and Maths GCSEs. There is no additional requirement for entry, however you can continue your education to degree level for a relevant area of study which would boost your knowledge and skills once you enter the workforce. Prospects suggests some relevant degrees you could gain could be:

  1. business-related studies
  2. civil and structural engineering
  3. estate management
  4. property development/management
  5. surveying
  6. urban and land studies
  7. law

What can you be doing now

Get your foot in the door by gaining some work experience to hone your skills and knowledge. Reach out to local estate agents in your area and see if you can shadow them for a day or week. This is a great way to learn the tricks of the trade and establish connections within the business for the future. Gaining experience in other areas such as sales and customer service would also be advantageous for this career as you would be able to transfer these skills over.
