It’s that time again – National Careers Week (NCW)!
This year, to celebrate NCW 2023, we wanted to do something a little different. We want to celebrate the fantastic work done by Careers Advisers far and wide and recognise those individuals.
Historically, Careers Advisers were seen as people sat in stuffy rooms in school libraries who students met with once every blue moon to talk about careers. But the role has evolved so much since then!
The modern-day Careers Adviser is a savvy, empowering individual who works with students in different ways to help them make informed decisions about their future.
When it comes to knowing what makes a great Careers Adviser, we are pretty knowledgeable – considering all our Advisers are the best of the best. So, we decided to ask them what they think makes a great Careers Adviser. Here’s a flavour of what they had to say.
- An active listener, who is encouraging and has a positive attitude
It sounds cliché, but communication and listening skills are the foundation of what makes a great Careers Adviser.
On a day-to-day basis, Careers Adviser meets with students, staff, and sometimes even parents so they need to be able to clearly communicate.
The ability to listen is just as important. Being able to listen and understand what young people share with them is VITAL!
- Someone who is friendly, approachable, and free from judgement
No matter what direction a young person is thinking of going in, a Careers Adviser’s job is to help guide them by informing them of what pathways are available.
At Progress Careers, we pride ourselves on our ethical and impartial approach. The job of a Careers Adviser is not to influence, but to inform!
- PASSION, PASSION, PASSION!
Having a real passion for Careers Education, Information, Advice, and Guidance (CEIAG) is essential. Does the idea of supporting young people to make informed decisions about their post-16 pathways help you get out of bed in the morning? Well, if so, you are the right person for the job.
Being a Careers Adviser is about so much more than signposting young people to relevant pathways, it’s about caring about each individual student and having that drive to really help them with their futures.
- A motivational and inspiring attitude
Careers Advisers pride themselves on inspiring young people by supporting them to make informed decisions about their futures and that’s just what our team does day in, day out (we may be biased but we think that they’re pretty brilliant at it as well!)
- Someone who is current, with their finger on the pulse of emerging markets and job trends
As a society, we are constantly evolving and technology is showing no signs of slowing down, but neither is the demand for green skills. Careers Advisers keep abreast of emerging markets helping to inform about careers of the future, whilst also staying up-to-date on what roles will always be in demand.
So this National Careers Week, we’re giving a huge shout-out to all of the Careers Advisers out there! The ones who go that extra mile to ensure young people have access to an impartial careers advice service that will best support them. To you all, we salute you!
